that day. september 11, 2001
After ignoring the phone 3 times, I finally got out of bed to answer it and see what was up. It was my roommate Dzija's father. He asked me if Dzija was around and I replied that he was most likely at work. At this point Mr. Dzija seemed upset and asked me to get up and check to see if Dzija was around. I got up and confirmed that he wasn't home and then asked if I could take a message. Mr. Dzija was like "A plane just hit the World Trade Cener." (Where Dzija works). I was like "What?" and Mr. Dzija told me "Uh, you should probably turn on the TV."I turned on the TV and like 35 seconds later, the second plane hit. Several minutes later my other roommate Barlow came home, he'd been walking across the Pulaski footbridge, saw the 2nd plane hit and figured that it might not be such a good idea to head into Manhattan. Not knowing what else to do, we went up to our roof to watch firsthand.
We didn't know what the fuck was going on. The WTC is like 15 blocks from where I work and I just kept thinking about how it was going to be weird to see the WTC buildings everyday with big holes in them. I kept trying to imagine how long it was going to take to fix them up.

Then, the first tower collapsed. I couldn't catch my breath. We didn't know what had happened. None of us thought at the time that the plane crash could've caused the building to collapse. We assumed that whoever crashed the plane must've also planted a bomb...which really scared the shit out of us. I remember thinking "Wow. They crashed a plane to get everyone's attention, and then they blew the building up."

Then the 2nd tower collapsed. I don't think I could speak for serveral minutes.

All the pics above were taken with a crappy little disposable camera. These two maps show where I live and where the above photos were taken.
